Iwata Tool unveils the “Open Garage” facility to promote manufacturing education

October 4, 2017

On October 4, 2017, Iwata Tool unveiled its “Open Garage” facility to the press. The space was constructed at the end of the previous year by remodeling an old factory building. The facility has a floor area of 300 square meters, with the first floor used as the Open Garage and the second floor serving as an employee cafeteria and café (see photo).

Mr. Masanao Iwata, president of Iwata Tool, said, “We would like local children, students, and others to learn about machine tools. They usually don’t have a chance to see machine tools.”

A total of 10 machine tools have been installed in the garage, including lathes, milling machines, and grinders. Visitors can participate in hands-on machining experiences. A 3D printer and robots are also installed in the café area on the second floor. The appeal of the Open Garage is that visitors can experience not only cutting, but also various kinds of manufacturing.

The company also received valuable input from local students when establishing the garage. “The starting point of the project is to increase the number of people who will be involved in manufacturing in the future. We have received innovative ideas like science cafés,” said Mr. Iwata.
