The Japan Machine Tool Builders’ Association (JMTBA) has released the final report on Japan’s machine tool orders for November 2025. Total orders amounted to JPY 137.0 billion, exceeding JPY 135 billion for the third consecutive month. Month-on-month (MoM) orders declined for the first time in three months, while year-on-year (YoY) orders increased for the fifth consecutive month. Compared with mid-year levels, demand has risen mainly due to foreign orders, and the market has remained generally steady.
Domestic orders totaled JPY 31.9 billion, down 10.4% MoM. This marked the second consecutive monthly decline and the first drop below JPY 35 billion in three months. YoY domestic orders also declined for the first time in three months, and overall domestic demand remained sluggish.
By industry, all major sectors declined MoM. However, orders from the Aircraft/Shipbuilding/Transport Equipment sector exceeded JPY 30 billion for the first time in two months and grew to more than three times the YoY level. While domestic demand continues to lack momentum overall, expectations are rising for the effects of policy measures such as the new government’s “17 strategic investment fields.” A gradual improvement is anticipated, with a more positive stance toward capital investment emerging.
Foreign orders totaled JPY 105.0 billion, down 2.5% MoM. Although this was the first monthly decline in three months, foreign orders exceeded JPY 100 billion for the second consecutive month, marking the fourth-highest level on record. YoY growth continued for the 14th consecutive month. Across the three major regions, orders remained generally firm, indicating continued improvement.
By region, Asia recorded JPY 54.3 billion, with solid demand maintained in China and India. Europe posted JPY 18.1 billion, supported by recovery in Germany and Italy, and YoY growth continued for the fifth consecutive month. North America recorded JPY 29.4 billion. Although some large orders related to aircraft and automotive industries fell off, overall order levels in North America remained high.
