DMG MORI and University of Tokyo establish MX Center

DMG MORI and the University of Tokyo announced on March 9 the establishment of the “Machining Transformation Research Center (MX Center)” within the university’s Graduate School of Engineering. The center will open on April 1, with Professor Naohiko Sugita serving as its director. 

The MX Center aims to achieve sustainable development and address challenges in the manufacturing industry by improving production process efficiency, enhancing energy efficiency, and tackling labor shortages. The center will advance machine tool technology based on visualization and modeling of machining phenomena such as cutting, grinding, and additive manufacturing.  

The center will also offer internship programs to develop specialized human resourcesIt will be operated long-term using revenue from an endowment fund established with donations from DMG MORI. 

At a press conference on March 9, President Dr. Masahiko Mori (photo right) expressed his expectations: “I hope this will lead to research on technologies looking 20 years ahead, which would be difficult for our company alone.” University of Tokyo President Dr. Teruo Fujii (photo left) stated: “We want to collaborate with diverse organizations both inside and outside the university to promote the creation of academic knowledge and its social implementation.”
