Toyota Research Institute-Advanced Development, a subsidiary of Toyota, announced on March 10, 2020 that it had successfully conducted a demonstration test of high definition map for automated driving on surface roads. It is generated by using image data derived from satellites and ordinary vehicles without use of conventional means of collecting data such as survey vehicles. It can be expected to shorten the time required to update the automated driving map, expand the area coverage, and reduce the cost of making and maintaining the map.
