Tungaloy launches AddForceBarrel profile milling cutter for efficient 3D surface machining

April 28, 2022

Tungaloy has introduced the “AddForceBarrel,” a new indexable profile milling cutter with barrel-shaped cutting edges, designed for high-efficiency semi-finishing of 3D surfaces.

Built for advanced 3D profiling

Following the success of the TungMeister series, which offered barrel-shaped milling heads for efficient finishing of complex 3D surfaces such as dies and turbomachinery parts, Tungaloy has applied the same design philosophy to develop an indexable insert solution with the AddForceBarrel.

Large-radius cutting edges for high productivity

The AddForceBarrel uses inserts with a large-radius arc of either 20 mm or 30 mm. These cutting edges provide a significantly larger engagement area with the workpiece compared to conventional ball nose end mills. This allows for greater step overs, resulting in improved metal removal rates, fewer cutter passes, and reduced cycle times.

Compact design with high insert density

Each insert is double-sided and ground to precision. Despite being compact (size 10), the inserts allow for high tooth density — a 20 mm-diameter cutter can carry up to four inserts. The long cutting edges also support optimal tilt angles: up to 21.5 degrees for 20 mm-radius inserts and up to 16 degrees for 30 mm-radius inserts.

Strong clamping and high-performance coating

The inserts are securely screw-clamped onto the cutter, with a wide seating area that enhances insert stability and machining accuracy. They are available in Tungaloy’s latest AH9130 PVD-coated grade, which ensures long and predictable tool life when machining materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and hardened steel.
