April 25, 2024

On March 30, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, an electric vehicle (EV) race on public roads, was held in Tokyo for the first time. The event was held at the iconic Tokyo Big Sight area in Koto-ku, Tokyo, and attracted around 20,000 visitors. Among the distinguished guests were Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and the Governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike, reflecting the high level of interest in the event (=photo, courtesy ABB).

ABB, the Swiss-based robot manufacturer, is the main sponsor of Formula E. During the event, a fan village was set up at Tokyo Big Sight for Formula E fans to gather, ABB was also present with a booth. ABB displayed its “Pixel Paint”, a painting system that uses an inkjet head mounted on an industrial robot, and other products.

Formula E aims to develop and promote technologies that reduce the environmental impact of racing. Shuichiro Nakajima, President of ABB Japan (Tokyo, Japan), remarked,  “ABB became the main sponsor because we share the philosophy of the race. Through Formula E, we want to promote environmentally friendly solutions such as Pixel Paint, which minimizes paint waste.”
