Japan preliminary machine tool orders in August 2024: Down 10.6% to JPY 110.7 billion

September 11, 2024

The Japan Machine Tool Builders’ Association (JMTBA) has released preliminary figures for new orders for machine tools in August 2024. The total amount of orders decreased by 10.6% from the previous month to 110.7 billion yen, marking the second consecutive month of decline and the first time in six months that the total has fallen below 120 billion yen. Compared with the same month last year, this was the first decline in four months.

Domestic demand continues to struggle

Domestic orders fell by 9.8% month-on-month (MoM) to 32.1 billion yen. This is the second consecutive month of decline, and the 24th consecutive month of year-on-year (YoY) decline, falling below 35 billion yen for the first time in three months. Factors such as summer holidays and the end of subsidy effects may have contributed to the decline. However, the market remains sluggish, with negative YoY figures for two consecutive years.

Foreign demand falls below JPY 80 billion

Foreign orders decreased by 10.1% MoM to 78.5 billion yen. This marks the second consecutive month of MoM decline and the first YoY decline in four months. This is the first time in 10 months that foreign orders have fallen below 80 billion yen, the time being October 2023 (78.4 billion yen). Further details on large-scale orders and the impact of China’s economic trends will be reported when the final figures are released.
