November 2024 Japan machine tool orders – total JPY 119.3 billion

December 25, 2024

The Japan Machine Tool Builders’ Association (JMTBA) has released the final figures for Japan’s new machine tool orders in November 2024. Total orders amounted to JPY 119.3 billion, down month-on-month (MoM) for the second consecutive month, but up year-on-year (YoY) for the second consecutive month. This is the first time in three months that the total has fallen below JPY 120 billion. While the decrease was mainly due to a decline in large orders from overseas, the total amount of orders remained at a solid level.

Domestic demand

Domestic orders reached JPY 34.3 billion, showing MoM growth for the first time in two months and YoY growth for the first time in 27 months. However, the total remained below JPY 35 billion for the second consecutive month.

Among 11 industry sectors, six recorded both MoM and YoY growth. While some positive results from the Japan International Machine Tool Fair (JIMTOF) were observed, the overall recovery remains sluggish, with weak demand from the automotive and aerospace industries.

Foreign demand

Foreign orders totaled JPY 84.9 billion, showing a MoM decline for the first time in three months, but posting YoY growth for the second consecutive month. This was the third consecutive month that overseas orders exceeded JPY 80 billion, but fell just short of JPY 85 billion.

Asia: While large orders from China, Vietnam and India declined compared to the previous month, China maintained robust demand, particularly in the automotive sector. Asia as a whole exceeded JPY 40 billion for the eighth consecutive month, reflecting a sustained high level of orders.

Europe: A reactionary drop from the previous month’s substantial orders led to a decline, with total orders falling below JPY 15 billion for the first time in two months, indicating a lack of momentum in the region.

North America: The U.S. recorded orders exceeding JPY 23 billion for the first time in six months, while Mexico showed a slight slowdown. Overall, total orders in North America exceeded JPY 25 billion for the first time in four months.
