Intermold 2025 showcases latest mold manufacturing technologies

Focus on stable precision and automation 

From April 16 to 18, Intermold 2025 was held at Tokyo Big Sight in Koto Ward, Tokyo. A total of 525 companies and organizations exhibited, and the three-day event attracted more than 40,000 visitors. 

With rising demands for precision in mold machining and ongoing labor shortages, many exhibitors highlighted the latest technologies for stabilizing machining accuracy and promoting automation. 

Stable precision even during long machining

Makino Milling Machine showcased the V300 vertical machining center, developed to meet demands for high-precision mold machining. 

The machine features enhanced thermal displacement control in all axes and sliding components, and includes a standard function that minimizes positioning errors caused by temperature fluctuations. 

A Makino representative commented, “The machine maintains high accuracy even during long machining cycles. Since its launch last year, customer feedback has been very positive.” 

The company also displayed a sample mold used for medical mask production, emphasizing the excellent surface finish of the V300. 

Yasda Precision Tools presented its YBM 9150V Ver., a BT40-taper vertical machining center that offers the same high machining accuracy as Yasda’s smaller models. 

A representative from the Nagano Sales Office commented, “With a large machining area and stable accuracy even at the edges of the table, the machine is ideal for processing multiple small workpieces at once.” 

Sample parts machined on the YBM 9150V Ver. were on display, and a hand-scraping experience corner also drew many visitors to Yasda’s booth.

Active automation proposals

FANUC displayed a range of compact machining equipment, including a small machining center and a wire electrical-discharge machine, integrated with its CRX collaborative robot series to demonstrate automation. 

The robot opened the machine door, placed the workpiece into the vise, and tightened it by rotating the handle—automating the entire setup process. A representative from the Robomachine Sales Promotion Division commented, “We hope the demonstration helped visitors visualize how automation can be implemented in their own facilities.” 

Automation proposals were also seen from other companies. 

For example, Seibu Electric & Machinery exhibited its SE-Connect system, which automates pre-machining operations such as aligning the workpiece and inputting machining programs. 

Many new tools unveiled

NS TOOL introduced three new products, including the CBN 4-Flute Long Neck Corner Radius End Mill SSR400, made with cubic boron nitride (CBN). 

By increasing the number of cutting edges and optimizing the shape for greater tip rigidity, the tool enables high-efficiency machining. It is suitable for rough and semi-finish machining of hard materials. 

UNION TOOL presented the UDC-S series, a new carbide end mill released in May. 

Its cuttingedge geometry and coating are designed to reduce machining loads.  A representative from the 2nd Sales Department explained, “The tool delivers long life even when machining tough materials. It’s ideal for bevel gear mold machining.” 

MOLDINO exhibited the IX-EPOCH Deep Ball TH3, a ball end mill made with a new cemented carbide material co-developed with a material manufacturer. 

Compared to conventional carbide, the new material offers enhanced wear and chipping resistance.  A MOLDINO representative commented, “This base material changes the conventional image of cemented carbide tools. As a manufacturer that works directly with materials, we’re proud to introduce this product.”
