Mitsubishi Electric has refreshed its flagship line of wire electrical discharge machines (EDMs) for the first time in 13 years. The company developed the new MG series as a global high-volume product line and began domestic sales on July 30. The series made its debut at the in-house exhibition MMF2025, held over two days at the Nagoya Works (Higashi-ku, Nagoya), drawing significant attention from visitors.

The MG series succeeds the MV series, Mitsubishi Electric’s mainstay for the high-volume segment, marking the first full model change since 2012. “Our target industries include automotive, semiconductors, aerospace, and more. The ‘G’ in MG represents concepts such as ‘Global’ and ‘Growth,’ highlighting its role as a flagship series for deepening our presence in the global high-volume market,” explained Nobuyuki Takahashi, General Manager of the EDM Systems Department at the Nagoya Works. The company aims to sell 1,200 units annually across the series.

Manufacturers are increasingly demanding higher machining accuracy and productivity while struggling with shortages of skilled workers. At the same time, energy efficiency and cost reduction—such as lowering electricity bills—are also pressing needs. To address these challenges, Mitsubishi Electric designed the MG series around three core concepts: “high-quality machining for all,” “uninterrupted operation,” and “energy savings.”

The MG series integrates the company’s proprietary AI technology Maisart, enabling even beginners to replicate machining conditions typically set by experienced operators. A newly developed wire transport unit improves the success rate of automatic wire threading, allowing for longer continuous operation.

At MMF2025, Mitsubishi Electric showcased a total of 23 machines across 11 series, including EDMs, laser processing machines, and metal 3D printers. The MG series stood out as one of the main attractions. In addition to standalone products, the company also presented automation solutions combining machining systems with autonomous mobile robots and automated sorting equipment.

“This was our first nationwide customer event since 2014, bringing in clients from across Japan, from Hokkaido to Kagoshima,” noted Hiroshi Hasegawa, Senior General Manager of the Industrial Automation Machinery Division. Over the two-day event, more than 1,500 visitors attended—well above initial expectations—and the company secured preliminary orders totaling approximately 1 billion yen.
