SoftBank Group agreed on October 8 to acquire the robotics business of ABB, a major Swiss robotics manufacturer. The total purchase price is US$5.375 billion (approximately ¥818.7 billion). The acquisition is expected to be completed in 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
SoftBank Group has recently declared its ambition to achieve Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI)—a level of intelligence surpassing that of humans. To realize this vision, the company has been actively investing and expanding in multiple AI-related fields, including AI robotics. This acquisition forms part of that broader strategy.
Masayoshi Son, Chairman and CEO of SoftBank Group, stated: “Together with ABB Robotics, we will unite world-class technology and talent under a shared vision. By integrating ASI and robotics, we aim to achieve a groundbreaking evolution that opens the door to humanity’s future.”
