September 2025 Japan machine tool orders total JPY 139.1 billion

October 31, 2025

The Japan Machine Tool Builders’ Association (JMTBA) has released the final report on Japan’s machine tool orders for September 2025.

Total orders amounted to JPY 139.1 billion, marking the seventh consecutive month above JPY 120 billion and the first time in six months exceeding JPY 135 billion.

Although global economic trends remain uncertain and monthly fluctuations continue, overall demand for capital investment in machine tools remains generally steady.

Domestic demand rises ahead of fiscal half-year end

Domestic orders totaled JPY 43.6 billion, up 36.8% from the previous month, marking the first month-on-month increase in three months and the first year-on-year rise in six months. Orders exceeded JPY 40 billion for the first time in six months.

The growth was supported by strong demand at the end of the fiscal first half, large-scale orders in multiple industries, and the approval of the second round of energy-saving subsidies.

By industry, Aircraft/Shipbuilding/Transport equipment recorded approximately JPY 6.5 billion, significantly surpassing its previous all-time high.

Foreign demand remains strong, led by Asia

Foreign orders reached JPY 95.5 billion, up 8.2% from the previous month, marking the first month-on-month increase in six months and the 12th consecutive year-on-year increase. Orders exceeded JPY 95 billion for the first time in four months.

By region, North America saw orders rise for the second straight month on both a month-on-month and year-on-year basis, recovering to the JPY 30 billion level after a mid-year slowdown.

In Europe, post-summer recovery led to higher orders mainly within the EU, though levels remain below the roughly JPY 17 billion seen in the first half of last year.

In Asia, China remained strong and India steady, with regional orders exceeding JPY 49 billion for the first time in six months—demonstrating continued solid performance.
