Next-generation smart factory with 30% increase in MC production capacity (1/2)

Okuma established the new Dream Site 3(DS3) factory, in Kani Plant, Gifu Prefecture, which manufacture machining centers (MC). The amount of investment is 10 billion yen. The DS3 is a vertical and horizontal MC parts machining plant that incorporates the latest automation and IoT technologies. The company plans to increase its MC production capacity by 30% compared to conventional ratio.

Integrating automation technology and field wisdom

Part machining of vertical and horizontal MC will be done in the new plant DS3. The area of the building is about 9600 square meters, and 10 billion yen was invested in the building and facilities. DS3 incorporated the concept of the World Headquarters Oguchi Plant, DS1 and DS2, in Oguchi-cho, Aichi prefecture. DS refers to a smart factory that integrates automation technology and field wisdom to realize high-mix low-volume production with high productivity.

President (the post was at the time) Yoshimaro Hanaki gave a speech at the DS3’s completion ceremony held on May 24, 2019 as follows. “Reiwa, the name of the new Japanese era, means beautiful harmony. DS3 is a factory where automation technology and on-site techniques play beautiful harmony suitable for the new era. The DS3 three features are following: 1. Advanced process integration and automation technology. 2. Rapid operation instructions using IoT technologies. 3. Monitoring of the manufacturing progress and operating conditions of the entire plant. The company plans to establish an integrated production system of vertical MC, horizontal MC and double-column MC at Kani plant, and to increase the production capacity of MC by 30% compared to the conventional ratio.
