On January 29, 2020, Toray Industries announced the development of “PICASUS VT,” a world-first optical film that transmits light from the front and reflects light from oblique angles. The film is expected to be used in applications such as head-mounted displays (HMDs) and head-up displays (HUDs) for augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR), as well as in privacy protection and display films.
PICASUS VT achieves directional light control through Toray’s proprietary nano-lamination technology, combined with high-precision control of the resin’s refractive index based on a newly designed optical structure. This allows the film to transmit light when viewed from the front, while reflecting light from diagonal angles.
When applied to HMDs and HUDs for AR and MR, the film enables clear projection of information without compromising forward visibility.
Toray aims to commercialize PICASUS VT within three years, positioning it as a core material for next-generation display technologies.
