Sumitomo Electric Industries announced on January 23 that it will fully expand its cutting tool business into the aircraft sector. As part of this initiative, its U.S. group company, Sumitomo Electric Carbide, joined the Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center Research and Development (OMIC R&D) in December 2019.
OMIC R&D is a consortium involving industry, academia, and government, with a focus on aerospace innovation. By participating in this consortium, Sumitomo Electric aims to understand the specific cutting needs related to aircraft engines and structural components, especially in the U.S. and European markets.
The company plans to accelerate the development of high-efficiency, long-life cutting tools that meet the demands of aerospace manufacturing, and to strengthen its global presence in the aircraft industry.
