Magnescale to build new plant for semiconductor laser

DMG MORI’s group company Magnescale, builder of measuring equipment, will build a new plant for semiconductor lasers for measuring purposes at its Isehara Works in Kanagawa Prefecture. The total investment is about 3 billion yen. The new plant will have a building area of 450 square meters and a total floor space of about 900 square meters. The building will be completed in June 2023, and operations will start in January 2024.

Magnescale manufactures linear scales for machine tools and laser scales for semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Recently, as the degree of integration of semiconductors has increased, there has been a demand for higher precision laser scales. The company also forecasts that the demand for semiconductor lasers to be incorporated into laser scales will reach 100,000 units per year by 2025.

Therefore, the company decided to build a new plant and start to produce semiconductor lasers in-house. At the new plant, the company will not only develop and manufacture semiconductor lasers for measurement purposes, but will also look to develop semiconductor lasers for integration into DMG MORI’s laser processing machines and additive manufacturing machines in the future.
