On February 20, the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) unveiled details of its “Future Production Line” project, being carried out in collaboration with DMG MORI and FANUC.
As part of this project, the two companies have established a dynamic production pilot line at DMG MORI’s Nara Product Development Center. This line is designed to be flexibly and quickly reconfigurable, and is controlled via a “local 5G” communication environment, which enables high-speed wireless communication on-site.
The pilot line integrates a cloud-based wireless communication platform that connects existing production equipment and automated guided vehicles (AGVs). It also includes a “Machining Assist Module”, software that guides AGVs to execute appropriate machining based on real-time conditions.
In the event of equipment failure, AGVs automatically retrieve replacement equipment, and the Machining Assist Module adjusts the machining programs so that production continues uninterrupted. Meanwhile, the faulty equipment can be repaired without halting operations, allowing the system to avoid supply chain disruptions.
The three parties will continue to verify the pilot line’s practical applications for real-world manufacturing environments.
NEDO is a Japanese national research and development agency that promotes the creation of innovation by supporting the development of technologies necessary for realizing a sustainable society. Acting as an innovation accelerator, NEDO promotes and demonstrates high-risk, practical technologies to help resolve societal challenges.
