The Japan Machine Tool Builders’ Association (JMTBA) has released the confirmed figures for Japan’s machine tool orders in June 2025. Total orders reached JPY 133.1 billion. Month-on-month (MoM), this marked the first increase in three months and the first time in two months that orders surpassed the JPY 130 billion mark. Year-on-year (YoY), orders declined for the first time in nine months due to the absence of several large orders from North America recorded in May. However, the decline was minimal at just 0.5%, and overall demand remained firm, supported mainly by external markets.
Domestic orders rose MoM for the first time in two months, totaling JPY 39.9 billion. Although YoY figures declined for the third consecutive month, the decrease was less pronounced. Orders were lifted by demand tied to the end of the fiscal first half and by increased capital investment from small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that received government subsidies. The monthly figure came close to the JPY 40 billion mark for the first time in three months, with a MoM increase of over 20%.
By industry, the “Motor Vehicles” sector grew by more than 40% MoM. However, both the automotive and semiconductor manufacturing equipment sectors—the two largest domestic demand segments—have yet to return to their previous peak levels. As a result, overall domestic demand remains flat.
Foreign orders totaled JPY 93.2 billion, marking a MoM decline for the third consecutive month but a YoY increase for the ninth straight month. Orders remained above the JPY 95 billion level for the fourth month in a row, indicating continued strength in overseas markets.
In North America, orders declined MoM for the first time in three months, mainly due to the absence of large-scale orders across various sectors. However, the region maintained a relatively high order level.
Orders in Europe showed a slight MoM increase but have not yet recovered to the levels seen in the first half of the previous year.
In Asia, China remained strong and India continued steady performance. Vietnam saw a notable rise, approaching JPY 3 billion in orders for the first time in eight months. As a result, total orders from Asia exceeded JPY 45 billion for the fourth consecutive month.
