Toshiba Digital Solutions started a service, which automates metallographic tests implementing artificial intelligence (AI) for the steel industry and automotive and aircraft parts builders on June 2, 2020.
The inspectors originally used a microscope to inspect the grain size of the metal structure. However, there was a possibility that the test results may change depending to the person who is charge of the inspection because this method relies on the inspector’s sense. Further, it was difficult to automate the inspection while maintaining the same quality as the visual inspection by a skilled inspector. In the new service, AI learns from the cloud-based data including expert knowledge, and determines the grade of grain size of steel material . Thus, the accuracy of the test result is close to that of a visual inspection by a skilled inspector.
