NTT DOCOMO succeeds in controlling multiple robots remotely with single software

NTT DoCoMo, a major telecommunications company, announced on June 17, 2021 that it has succeeded in a demonstration experiment in which industrial robots from multiple manufacturers can be remotely controlled with a single software by utilizing the next-generation communication standard (5G).

Demonstration experiments were conducted by NTT DOCOMO, DENSO WAVE, Yamaha Motor, KAWADA ROBOTICS, Office FA.com, and ORiN Consortium. The experiment was taken place from March 4th to April 7th, 2021.

NTT DOCOMO and others used the middleware “ORiN” provided by ORiN Consortium and NTT DOCOMO’s 5G communication service to do experiments.

A robot operator connected Yamaha Motor’s SCARA robot and KAWADA ROBOTICS ‘ humanoid robot via ORiN. The operator remotely controlled the two robots using a 5G line while checking the situation at the site with high-definition video.

This experiment is useful for cooperation between robots and free layout construction by wireless connection.
