NSK, a leading manufacturer of machine components, has developed a retainer for rolling bearings made from 100% biomass plastic. Compared to the conventional fossil-derived polyamide 66, the plant-derived material can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 90%. According to NSK, this is the world’s first retainer made from biomass plastic.
The material cost is 1.5 to 2 times more expensive than polyamide 66. However, the overall cost of the bearings will only increase by about 1%. NSK plans to use the material in bearings for in-vehicle motors in automobiles and fan motors in air conditioners by 2023.
