On November 8, 2021, JTEKT, a major automotive parts maker, announced that it had developed a demonstration machine for the “J-DFAFC,” a fuel cell that uses aqueous formic acid solution as fuel.
Formic acid is produced as waste from the production of resin and acetic acid, and is mainly used in the fields of livestock farming and agriculture. Formic acid is superior to hydrogen and methanol in terms of safety, environmental friendliness, and energy density. The company focused on the properties of formic acid and began joint research with Associate Professor Takuya Tsujiguchi of Kanazawa University in 2018. The company has now manufactured a 50W-class demonstration machine for the first time in Japan. In the future, the company will continue its research to increase the output power, aiming to put it to practical use as an emergency power source.
