January 29, 2020

Toyota Motor announced on January 16, 2020 that it has signed an agreement with Joby Aviation to develop and commercialize all-electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft as a new sky mobility business. Toyota will leverage its strengths in vehicle development, production, and after-sales service to launch initiatives aimed at the early realization of the sky mobility business, which is expected to increase social needs in collaboration with Joby Aviation. Toyota will be involved in technological development of design, materials and electrification, and will share the know-how of the Toyota Production System (TPS).

Akio Toyoda, President and CEO of Toyota Motor said, “Sky mobility has the potential to significantly change people’s movements and lives in the future mobility society, and the practical application of sky mobility has been a dream since Toyota’s founding. We are delighted to contribute to the realization of mobility that provides freedom and enjoyment of movement, not only on land but also in the sky.”
