Denka, a comprehensive chemical manufacturer, announced on April 2, 2020, that it will resume production of diethyl malonate, a raw material used in the anti-influenza drug Avigan. The medicine is expected to have therapeutic effects against the coronavirus (COVID-19).
The production will begin in May 2020 at Denka’s Aomi Plant in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture. This initiative is in response to a request from the Japanese government, which is promoting efforts to combat the global spread of COVID-19.
Denka had produced diethyl malonate until April 2017 but had since ceased its production. To meet the urgent demand, the company will restart operations using the same facilities that were previously employed for the production.
Avigan is gaining attention as a potential treatment for COVID-19, for which no definitive cure has yet been established. Denka’s contribution is expected to help ensure a stable supply of the necessary pharmaceutical ingredients.
