Denka, a comprehensive chemicals company, announced on April 2, 2020, that it will produce diethyl malonate, a raw material for Avigan tablets, an anti-flu medicine for patients of the coronavirus. Denka will start to produce in May 2020 at the Aomi Plant in Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture in response to the request of the Japanese government. No cure has been established for coronavirus that continues to spread worldwide day by day, and Avigan tablets are expected to have a therapeutic effect on coronavirus. Denka has been producing diethyl malonate, a raw material for Avigan tablets, until April 2017, and plans to restart the facilities it had used in the past.
