Makino launches 5-axis MC for vertical and horizontal use

D2 enables process consolidation for large-scale mold machining

On December 2, 2020, Makino Milling Machine launched the D2, a 5-axis vertical machining center designed for large-scale mold applications. The company positions the machine as a solution for process integration, combining vertical and horizontal machining functions into a single unit.

The D2 adopts a double-column mechanical structure. In addition to the standard X, Y, and Z axes, the machine includes a W-axis for vertical movement of the crossrail. The work table features a C-axis, while the spindle head is equipped with A and B axes, giving the machine a total of seven controlled axes. Because the spindle head can rotate and tilt, the D2 functions as both a vertical and horizontal machining center.

Suited for heavy, complex mold parts

The D2 is capable of performing two major mold machining tasks in one setup:

  • Vertical machining for cutting the mold surface

  • Horizontal machining, such as drilling side holes and cooling water passages

The machine supports workpieces up to 2,100 mm in diameter and 1,700 mm in height, with a maximum loading weight of 10 tons. An optional automatic pallet changer (APC) is also available to support automation.
