Aisin AW, a subsidiary of Aisin Seiki, has announced plans to expand its manufacturing site in North Carolina, USA, to strengthen its automatic transmission (AT) business. The company will invest up to approximately $400 million in the new plant.
Production at the new facility is scheduled to begin in September 2021 and will include ATs for SUVs and hybrid transmissions for electric vehicles (EVs). The plant will have an annual production capacity of around 200,000 units.
Aisin AW plans to hire approximately 900 new employees to support the expanded operations.
The company initially established AW North Carolina in 1998 as its first manufacturing site in the United States. Since then, it has produced a total of approximately 6.7 million rear-wheel drive (RWD) and frontautomotive components-wheel drive (FWD) transmissions.
By increasing production capacity for transmissions used in SUVs and EVs—segments that are expected to grow significantly in the US market—Aisin AW aims to further enhance its competitiveness.
