February 26, 2020

Strengthening optical processing technology through university-based start-up collaboration

On February 21, 2020, Nikon announced that it had entered into a capital and business alliance agreement with XTIA, a start-up company from the Tokyo Institute of Technology specializing in optical comb sources. Under this agreement, Nikon will invest 800 million yen in XTIA through a third-party allocation of shares.

Aiming to expand material processing business

Nikon has positioned the material processing business as a new growth area and began expanding sales of optical processing machines in 2019. By combining XTIA’s proprietary light source technology with Nikon’s technical capabilities and expertise, the company aims to develop equipment with integrated shape measurement functionality.

This alliance is expected to accelerate Nikon’s efforts to commercialize advanced optical processing machines that contribute to high-precision manufacturing.
