The Japan Machine Tool Builders’ Association (JMTBA) announced the firm report of machine tool orders for March 2023. The total amount of orders received was 141 billion yen. The order amount increased for the first time in three months on a month-on-month (MoM) basis and decreased for the third consecutive month on a year-on-year (YoY) basis, exceeding 140 billion yen for the first time in three months. Domestic demand reflected the effect of the fiscal year-end, while foreign demand was boosted by large orders, keeping order volume at a high level. This was the 26th consecutive month in which orders exceeded 100 billion yen, and the 25th consecutive month in which orders exceeded 120 billion yen.
Domestic demand increased for the first time in two months MoM and decreased for the seventh consecutive month YoY to 49.3 billion yen, exceeding 45.0 billion yen for the first time in three months. While 10 out of 11 industries posted MoM gains due to the effect of the fiscal year-end, 9 industries posted YoY declines, indicating that the market is still in an adjustment phase.
Among the four major industries, “Industrial Machinery” exceeded 20 billion yen for the first time in six months due to the positive effect of the fiscal year-end, showing an increase of nearly 30% from the previous month. On the other hand, orders received by “Motor Vehicles” remained below 10 billion yen for the third consecutive month, showing no signs of recovery.
Foreign demand increased for the first time in three months on a MoM basis and decreased for the third consecutive month on a YoY basis to 91.6 billion yen. For the first time in three months, new orders exceeded 90.0 billion yen.
Orders received by region were as follows: In Asia, orders received from China exceeded 30 billion yen for the first time in five months due to increased orders for electrical & precision machinery despite decreased orders for industrial machinery, and orders received for Asia as a whole exceeded 40 billion yen for the first time in three months. In Europe, demand increased both MoM and YoY for the first time in two months, but has been on a flat trend since 2022. In North America, orders declined from the previous year’s record high level, but exceeded 27 billion yen for the first time in three months. Orders from the U.S. alone also remained at a high level, exceeding 25 billion yen for the first time in three months.
