The Japan Machine Tool Builders’ Association (JMTBA) released final machine tool order figures for July 2026. Total orders reached JPY 193.0 billion, declining MoM for the first time in two months but increasing YoY for the 13th consecutive month, and exceeding JPY 170 billion for the fifth consecutive month. The figure ranked as the third-highest on record, behind only the JPY 203.4 billion recorded in June and the JPY 193.5 billion recorded in March this year. Orders during the summer, a period when demand typically eases, remained close to the March level, which was boosted by fiscal year-end demand. This reinforces the view that capital investment demand remains in an expansion phase.
Foreign orders totaled JPY 139.8 billion. The YoY growth rate exceeded 50% for the second consecutive month. Although orders declined MoM, the figure ranked as the third-highest on record, matching the ranking for total orders. By region, North America continued to see large-scale orders in the aerospace sector, alongside strong demand from job shops and energy-related industries, with orders exceeding JPY 40 billion for the second consecutive month. In Europe, improvements in Germany’s previously delayed administrative procedures prompted the resumption of stalled capital investment, with orders in Germany exceeding JPY 4 billion for the first time in three months, while orders also increased in other major European countries. Europe as a whole exceeded JPY 20 billion for the first time in three months. In Asia, regional orders declined MoM from the record high set in the previous month but remained at approximately JPY 75 billion, broadly in line with the figures recorded from March through May, reflecting continued strength. Demand remained firm in China and India, while orders also increased in South Korea, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia.
