Mitsui Seiki develops HU63A-5X Turning horizontal 5-axis machining center

Mitsui Seiki Kogyo has developed the “HU63A-5X Turning,” a machine with turning capability based on its horizontal 5-axis machining center (MC) “HU63A-5X.” The new model inherits the well-regarded high-rigidity base structure and 630 mm square pallet, while incorporating a high-speed, high-torque turning table. It consolidates 5-axis machining and turning — operations that previously required multiple machine tools and setup changes — into a single machine, enabling machining to be completed in a single setup. For the machining of aircraft engine cases and large, complex-shaped components used in the energy sector, the machine enables process consolidation and improved machining accuracy.

Large workpiece machining completed in a single setup

The manufacture of aircraft engine cases, high-precision compressor impellers, and precision valves demands high accuracy in both 5-axis machining and turning. Conventionally, large workpieces had to be transferred between multiple machines and re-chucked at each process stage. This required significant time for setup changes, and minor positioning errors during re-chucking could potentially lead to defective parts.

The HU63A-5X Turning is designed to perform roughing, finishing, and turning in a single setup while maintaining the high geometric accuracy developed through its jig boring technology.

Mechanisms for maintaining high machining accuracy

The X, Y, and Z axes each provide a stroke of 900 mm. The guide mounting surfaces are hand-scraped by skilled technicians. The high-rigidity machine structure stably absorbs unbalanced vibrations and cutting loads generated during turning, achieving both extended tool life and high surface quality.

In high-speed turning operations, thermal displacement caused by heat generation in the B-axis can affect machining accuracy. The machine features enhanced B-axis cooling to suppress thermal displacement, maintaining stable machining accuracy even during extended machining operations.
