Shibaura Machine launched the “VM-450A(5),” a precision machining center, as a new addition to its machining center lineup on September 30. The machine was developed as a precision machining center capable of meeting high-load machining needs, targeting the automotive optical components and medical parts markets in North America and Japan. It inherits the technology and know-how of the company’s “UVM series” of ultraprecision machining centers while offering greater versatility.
In addition to three linear axes driven by linear motors, the machine features a high-precision 2-axis rotary table driven by direct-drive (DD) motors. High-precision, high-speed simultaneous 5-axis machining enables machining from a blank workpiece to the final shape without setup changes, contributing to higher productivity.
The machine is equipped with a bearing spindle with a maximum rotational speed of 40,000 rpm and adopts the “HSK-E40” tool holder standard, widely used for high-speed machining of small workpieces. The combination of high-speed rotation and cutting rigidity enables continuous machining from roughing through finishing.
The machine also incorporates a range of in-house developed technologies, including the imaging-based tool geometry measurement system “FormEye,” the tool path vector correction function “VectPath,” and the imaging-based workpiece measurement system “ShapeEye.” These technologies help reduce reliance on operator skills and contribute to labor savings. Software and programs from the “UVM series” can also be used with the machine.
Beyond the primary target markets of automotive optical components and medical parts, the company plans to expand sales into the press die and precision parts machining markets. The VM-450A(5) will make its public debut at JIMTOF2026, the 33rd Japan International Machine Tool Fair, taking place in Tokyo from October 26 to 31.
