On May 25, 2021, Japan Machine Tool Builders’ Association (JMTBA) announced the confirmed report of Japan’s machine tool orders received in April. The total amount of orders received was 123.9 billion yen, up 120.8% from the same month of the previous year. The year-on-year rate has increased for 6 consecutive months. The month-on-month decrease was 3.1%, the first decrease in three months. Domestic demand increased 70.6% year-on-year to 36.0 billion yen, and foreign demand increased 151.2% year-on-year to 87.9 billion yen.
Domestic demand is recovering moderately compared to foreign demand, which is recovering rapidly. Although the month-on-month decrease for the first time in three months, orders from all industries increased year-on-year. According to JMTBA members, demand for semiconductors is increasing due to various factors, and companies related to semiconductor manufacturing equipment continue to make active investments.
Foreign demand exceeded 85 billion yen for the second consecutive month. Orders from Asia and Europe increased month-on-month. In addition to China, which has already recovered, it is recovering in a wide range of industries in other regions as well.
