Hitachi announced on September 30 that it had signed a strategic partnership with FANUC toward the joint commercialization of physical AI implementation — artificial intelligence technology that interacts with the physical world.
Under the partnership, the two companies will jointly validate and deploy physical AI systems that combine Hitachi’s AI technologies, including “HMAX Industry,” with FANUC’s AI technologies and industrial robots.
The companies will begin by validating the systems at Hitachi Group factories, using them as “Customer Zero,” with plans to begin deploying solutions across a wide range of industries, including semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, advanced materials, automotive, logistics, food, shipbuilding, and agriculture, from fiscal 2027.
Toshiaki Tokunaga, President and CEO of Hitachi, commented: “By providing integrated support from on-site implementation of physical AI through operation and continuous improvement, we aim to contribute to improving productivity and quality across manufacturing operations and addressing social challenges such as labor shortages.”
Kenji Yamaguchi, President and CEO of FANUC, commented: “By combining Hitachi’s advanced AI technologies with FANUC’s highly reliable products, sophisticated control technologies, AI expertise, and extensive robotics experience, we aim to accelerate the deployment of physical AI in real-world manufacturing environments.”
